Generate tags in the Document Generation editor

Generate document tags in the altaFlow Document Generation editor — create text, table, list, conditional, and image tags with formatting options.

The altaFlow Document Generation editor includes a built-in Tag Generator that creates ready-to-use tags for your document templates — text placeholders that get replaced with real data when the document is generated. Use it to insert fields, tables, conditional content, or images into your Document Generation templates without writing tag syntax manually.

Tags connect the Document Generation template to workflow data. For example, a "Client name" tag in a contract template automatically fills with the actual client name when the workflow runs.

How to generate a tag

1. To open the Tag Generator, switch to the Tags panel in the upper right corner of the online editor.

2. In the Generator tab, select the tag type: Insert text, Insert table, List, Add conditional logic, or Insert image. Then, enter the field name and select the tag formatting such as text, date, number, or currency.

3. Once finished, the tag is automatically generated according to your settings. Select Copy tag above the tag box to copy it. Paste the tag anywhere in your Document Generation template by pressing Ctrl+V on your keyboard.

Tip: For more detailed information on tags, go to the Documentation tab of the Tags panel.

Tag types explained

The Document Generation Tag Generator supports five tag types, each designed for a different content pattern in your template:

  • Insert text — inserts a placeholder for single text values pulled from workflow fields (customer name, order ID, contract date). Use for most simple data-to-template mappings.

  • Insert table — creates a tag block that expands into a repeating table based on your data source. Ideal for line items in invoices, order details, or product catalogs.

  • List — generates a dynamic bulleted or numbered list where each item comes from workflow data. Perfect for participant lists, checklist items, or dependent documents.

  • Add conditional logic — wraps a section of content that appears only when a specified condition holds true. Common uses: legal clauses shown only for specific jurisdictions, discount text visible only for premium-tier customers.

  • Insert image — embeds a variable image at document generation time. Common uses: signer signature images, watermark logos, dynamic product photos, or QR codes for tracking.
